Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the right to question certain calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
